Emissions

Emission testing plays a crucial role in the automotive industry and in all sectors where indoor air quality, the amount of emitted organic compounds, and the health and safety compliance of materials are of critical importance. These measurements identify which volatile components may be released from plastics, adhesives, coatings, or textiles under normal or elevated temperature conditions, and evaluate their impact on the environment or vehicle interior air quality.

Fogging

Fogging is an extremely important parameter in the automotive industry, as volatile components may evaporate from interior materials when exposed to heat and subsequently condense on colder glass surfaces, forming a disturbing oily film layer. The purpose of fogging testing is to determine the quantity of condensable substances using various standardized methods.

The fogging value helps predict how much a given material can contribute to window fogging, impaired vision, or the development of unpleasant odors. The test is mandatory for all components and trim used in automotive interiors.

Formaldehyde content

Formaldehyde can be a by-product of the production of many plastics and textiles, so it is important to determine the formaldehyde emission of the material. The test is performed using a photometric method that measures the amount of formaldehyde released with high sensitivity and accuracy.

This test is essential for all automotive interior materials, as excessive formaldehyde concentrations can cause irritation, unpleasant odors or health problems. OEMs prescribe strict limit values, compliance with which must be verified by laboratory measurements.

Odor test

The purpose of the odor test is to examine what kind of odor a material emits under different temperature conditions. In the automotive industry, it is particularly important that the coverings, plastics, and textiles used in the passenger compartment have a pleasant or neutral odor and do not emit unpleasant, irritating components.

The test is carried out by an expert panel, using a specific evaluation scale. Based on the results of the odor test, it can be decided whether the given material is suitable for use in vehicle interiors.

Organic emissions (VOC emissions)

The organic matter emissions test reveals what volatile organic compounds (VOCs) a material emits when heated. These substances can contribute to poor air quality, unpleasant odors, or even health risks.

The test is performed using gas chromatography analysis, which measures the emitted components and their total value with high precision. Knowledge of VOC levels is key to the supplier qualification of all automotive interior components.

Emissions – Volatile Component Testing for Automotive and Plastics Applications

Emissions Testing – Comprehensive Analysis According to Industrial and Automotive Requirements

Emissions testing plays a fundamental role in all industries where users are exposed to various plastics, coatings or adhesives in enclosed spaces for extended periods of time. In the automotive industry, it is particularly important that materials used in interior spaces do not emit unpleasant odors, irritating components or volatile components that can cause fogging on the windshield. The aim of the tests is to provide reliable, measurable and comparable results on the behavior of materials under different temperature and environmental conditions.

Fogging Testing

Fogging test determines which volatile components evaporate from the material and condense on cold surfaces. The test is particularly important in the automotive industry, as internal fogging of the windshield can pose a safety risk. Different measurement techniques allow for the accurate assessment of the mass, light transmission or visual appearance of condensable materials, providing manufacturers with easily comparable results.

Formaldehyde emission

Formaldehyde is one of the most important organic compounds tested, which can be released during the decomposition of certain plastics, coatings or adhesive systems. The test is performed using a photometric method that determines the amount of formaldehyde emitted with high sensitivity. The results obtained are essential for the material to meet health and automotive indoor air quality requirements.

Odor test

The purpose of the odor emission test is to determine the odor intensity and odor quality characteristic of the interior. The test is carried out in chambers according to standards and under defined temperature conditions, where trained evaluators score the samples. Odor testing is particularly important in the automotive industry, where customer comfort and the quality of the interior environment are essential requirements.

Organic emissions (VOC, SVOC)

During organic emission tests, we determine the total amount of volatile and semi-volatile components emitted using gas chromatography analysis. The test is suitable for determining the TVOC value and also for identifying individual components. This is one of the most important methods for the qualification of automotive and electronic components, as it provides a clear picture of which components can enter the indoor air.

Emission analysis is indispensable in any manufacturing process where materials are used in enclosed environments for extended periods. The results support the selection of appropriate raw materials, the optimization of production technologies, and the prevention of customer complaints. In addition to the automotive industry, sectors such as packaging, electronics, construction, and furniture manufacturing also rely heavily on these tests, as indoor air quality has become a critical quality and health requirement.
