Heat Resistance Testing
Heat resistance testing plays a fundamental role in the plastics, automotive and electronics manufacturing processes, as it determines the temperature range in which materials maintain their mechanical stability and structural integrity. The response to thermal stress is critical in all industrial applications, especially for components that are exposed to heat for extended periods or in repeated cycles. Without measuring heat resistance, neither the choice of raw materials, nor the expected life of the product, nor its resistance to extreme environmental conditions can be reliably determined.
Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT)
Determining heat deflection temperature (HDT) is one of the most important methods for measuring the thermal resistance of plastics. During the test, the temperature at which a test specimen placed horizontally on two supports bends to a specified extent is determined - with the temperature increasing at a constant rate. The test is carried out at different stress levels (0.45 MPa, 1.80 MPa or 8 MPa) so that the behavior of the material in different load situations can be examined.
The HDT measurement can be used to determine the maximum temperature up to which a plastic can be used under structural or mechanical load. The test is particularly important for the qualification of automotive technical parts, electrical components, household appliances and injection-molded elements, where thermal stress can cause significant deformation.
The test result can be easily compared between different material types and provides manufacturers with precise information for selecting the right raw material or optimizing the production process.

Softening temperature (Vicat)
When determining the softening temperature (Vicat), we examine the temperature at which the plastic specimen begins to soften so much that a standard indentation roller penetrates the surface of the material to a depth of 1 mm under a given load and with a continuous increase in temperature. The test is a simple, yet extremely informative method for determining the thermal sensitivity and application limits of plastics.
Determining the Vicat softening temperature is an important development and quality assurance tool in industries where plastic components operate near heat-transfer elements, under mechanical load or in environments exposed to continuous heat. The test result helps to select the appropriate raw material and accurately indicates the temperature limits of the material.
The method is indispensable for the plastics, automotive, electronics and packaging industries, as the softening temperature largely determines the applicability and expected service life of the final product.

Type of tests
Heat resistance – comprehensive tests to determine the thermal stability of plastics and composites
The aim of the tests is to reveal when the plastic begins to deform, when it softens, and under what load it loses its strength. This is particularly important for injection-molded, extruded, and thermoformed products, as well as in all areas of application where even a millimeter difference in deformation can cause loss of function. MÜKI LABOR's modern measuring equipment and procedures based on international standards ensure that the results are accurate, comparable, and can be used for manufacturer decisions.
The two most important methods of heat resistance testing are the determination of heat deflection temperature (HDT) and Vicat softening temperature . These procedures examine materials under different loading conditions and are therefore used complementarily in industrial practice. Together, these two measurement types allow for the precise determination of when a plastic material begins to lose its dimensional stability, when plastic deformation starts to occur, and up to what temperature it remains stable under various thermal loads.
Heat resistance testing is essential in both development processes and quality assurance. It can be used to filter out unsuitable raw materials, identify manufacturing defects, and validate the effects of new recipes and additives. In the case of automotive interior components, electronic casings, household appliance components, and industrial products exposed to heat, heat resistance is a fundamental requirement for supplier compliance.
MÜKI LABOR performs heat resistance tests with decades of professional experience and modern measuring instruments, ensuring that our partners receive all the necessary data for reliable product qualification, development, and auditing.
