Environmental resistance

The purpose of environmental resistance tests is to show how a material or component behaves under permanent or changing environmental influences. Temperature fluctuations, humidity, UV radiation, precipitation, corrosion or chemical effects are all factors that can significantly affect the lifespan of plastics, coatings and composite systems. MÜKI LABOR's comprehensive environmental resistance measurements provide an accurate picture of how these materials change in the short and long term, what mechanical or optical changes may occur, and how this affects the safety and functionality of the final product.

Weather resistance

Weathering tests are designed to show how a material or coating reacts to simulated forms of natural environmental influences, in particular UV radiation, temperature fluctuations and the effects of precipitation. During the tests, samples are exposed to artificial light in cycles that mimic the weather conditions experienced over the years. At the end of the cycles, the changes are compared with the reference, examining color deviation, loss of gloss, cracking, chalking or other aging phenomena.

Weathering tests are particularly important for automotive exteriors, facade materials, paints, coatings and outdoor plastic parts. The tests can be used to determine the long-term durability of the material and predict possible degradation processes.

Climatic testing

Climate testing examines the response of samples to changes in humidity and temperature in a controlled climate chamber. The cyclically changing conditions well model the stress effects that occur in automotive, electronics or construction applications - such as condensation, deformation, cracking or adhesion failures. The aim of the tests is to understand the long-term stability and behavior of materials.

The tests can reveal the chemical and physical changes that occur in response to moisture, which significantly affect the service life, dimensional stability and mechanical properties of the material. Climate testing can provide designers and manufacturers with early warning signals before the component actually fails.

Corrosion resistance

The purpose of corrosion resistance tests is to determine the resistance of metal components and coatings to salt fog or salt spray under accelerated conditions. Tests performed in a salt fog chamber simulate an environment that develops over a long period of time in real life, thus providing a quick and accurate picture of the protective ability and service life of coatings.

The method is particularly important for automotive body parts, exterior and interior metal cladding, screws, fasteners and any component that is exposed to moisture, salt or corrosive effects. Cyclic corrosion tests model the changing environmental effects even more realistically, thus providing a more accurate picture of the long-term behavior of materials.

Environmental resistance – tests to determine the durability of plastics, coatings and industrial components

Tests are particularly important in the automotive, electronics, construction and packaging industries, where manufacturers set strict service life and quality requirements. Environmental resistance tests help determine whether a product is suitable for extreme temperature conditions, UV exposure or corrosive environments, and to what extent physical or visual properties remain stable over the entire period of use.

The main testing areas—weathering resistance, climatic testing, and corrosion resistance—simulate different environmental influences under laboratory conditions using standardized methods. These measurements support material selection, quality control, product development, and complaint investigation. MÜKI LABOR performs these tests using modern climatic chambers, UV resistance equipment, and salt spray chambers, ensuring accurate, traceable, and auditable results.

Environmental resistance testing not only verifies product durability, but also plays a critical role in compliance with automotive OEM requirements, where the long-term performance and lifetime of components must often be guaranteed for decades. Laboratory testing enables the prediction of potential failures, thereby minimizing manufacturing risks and reducing long-term failure rates.
